Thousands pay respects, bid tearful adieu to Major Kaustubh Rane

Major Kaustubh P Rane (29) lost his life in a gun battle with the terrorists near the Line of Control (LOC), in Bandipura district in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday. He was one among the four army personnel who lost their lives. Major Rane’s mortal remains were sent in the coffin draped in the national tricolor. The coffin was received by his family, friends and the Army officials on late Wednesday night at the Mumbai airport.

Late Major Rane was also decorated with the Sena Gallantry Medal by President Ram Nath Kovind on the 69th Republic day celebration earlier this year. A military truck carrying the coffin of late Major Rane arrived at his residence in Sheetal Nagar area in Mira Road for the last rites to be performed later in the day, reports Hindustan Times.

Moved by the unfortunate incident, thousands of onlookers gathered on both sides of Mira road. They showered flowers on the coffin and shouted slogans of “Major Kaustubh Rane, Amar Rahe” and “Bharat Mata Ki Jai,” and waved the Indian national flag, paying their last respects. His loss has left a deep void among the family members and friends. Kaustabh is survived by his parents Prakash and Jyothi Rane, sister Kashyapi, wife Kanika and a two-and-a half-year-old son Agastya.

Major Rane completed his high school from High Cross Convent and Royal College, Mira Road, Mumbai, and did his graduation from Shailendra College at Dahisar located in the western suburbs of Mumbai, reports The Quint.

The only son of his parents, it was Major Rane’s childhood dream to join the armed forces. He finished his military training from Pune, and was later commissioned as an officer from the elite Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai in 2011.

Commissioned as Lieutenant in the Indian Army, Late Major Rane was promoted to the Captain Rank. Earlier this year, he was elevated to the rank of Major with the 36 Rashtriya Rifles. He visited his parent’s in April this year for a brief period, before returning to his post.
