Latest version of the wild and muscular off-road weapon for the riches, Mercedes-AMG G 63 has been launched in India today. Updated with changes in almost all the departments, new G63 costs ₹ 2.19 crore (ex-showroom). This is Mercedes-Benz’s 10th launch in India this year and third in the last three weeks following the launches of the new C-Class and the E-Class All-Terrain.

The new generation Mercedes-AMG G 63 has undergone the greatest change in its history, says Mercedes. New G63 gets an all-new bodyshell and is mounted on a high-strength ladder-type frame. Usage of new material mix has increased its torsional rigidity but has also helped to cut-off about 65 kgs of weight.

New G63 gets the new signature Mercedes-AMG Panamericana grille with black finish. The SUV gets new round shaped daytime running lamps with new LED headlamps within. The monster sits on big 22-inch alloys with red brake calipers. One unique thing about the side profile of the SUV is the conventional exhaust pipes at the side just ahead of the rear wheels. At the rear, the G63 gets new LED taillamps.

Inside the big G, the comfort and luxury are taken straight from the S-Class. The dash gets a widescreen infotainment system with two 12.3-inch displays. The cabin of the new G 63 is bigger than its predecessor thanks to the increased overall dimensions. It also gets many driver assistance features like active brake assist, lane keeping assistance, adaptive cruise control and a blind spot monitoring system. The latter two are available as additional options.

Under the hood of the mighty AMG is a 4-litre twin turbo engine that churns out 585 horsepower and massive 850 Nm of torque. The engine is mated to AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission that, Mercedes says, has a model- specific software application to achieve very short shift times. The power is transmitted to all four wheels and takes the 2.5 tonne SUV from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds. Top speed of the car is electrically limited to 220 km/h.

Though Mercedes-AMG G 63 has never had a direct competitor, the recently launched Lamborghini Urus might break into the model’s sole dictatorship into the high-end performance SUV segment.
