With 2,000 women coming as potential delivery personnel, Swiggy is also taking measures to provide ‘safe-delivery zones’ for them.
According to various media reports, food ordering and delivery startup Swiggy will recruit about 2,000 women as delivery personnel by March 2019.
A statement by the Bengaluru-based company said, “About 2,000 women will join our delivery team by March next year. Over the last few months, we have been working on training women for opportunities in this growing food delivery sector.”
The company said that this is to make sure it has an inclusive team. Currently, it has a staff of over one lakh that delivers food across 45 cities daily. Out of this number, only 60 women are present in 10 cities – Kochi, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Nagpur, Pune, Kochi etc.
Hiring women as delivery personnel worldwide has been inadequate. Swiggy, funded by multiple firms for $465.5 million, wants to change that. The company said that they want to make a women-friendly work environment for their potential women staff. They are identifying ‘safe-zones’ for women delivery staff and will allow them to finish the deliveries by 6 pm.
“We are creating a women-friendly work environment with a dedicated helpline for any concern, as well as appointing more women in managerial roles,” the company said.
The food-tech giant started in 2014 and has more than 5,000,000 app installations. In an earlier conversation with YourStory, Vishal Bhatia, CEO of Swiggy Access, had said, “We are now looking at 10x the number of kitchens in the next six to nine months. And by 2020, we are looking at increasing presence in Tier-I and Tier-II towns by setting up in 30 to 40 cities.”
Swiggy has been working aggressively this year with the launch of two new products – Swiggy Access and Swiggy POP. The startup also acquired a cloud-based restaurant and recruiting women staff as delivery personnel seems to be a step in the same direction.
