Festive season added 10 Mn new online shoppers, tier 2 customers doubled: RedSeer Report

Online shoppers in India rose to around 24 million in festive season this year, according to a Red Seer report Festive Sale Month Performance. The festive season saw mobile phone and electronics as top categories contributing to almost 80 per cent of the total gross merchandise.
This was a 50 per cent rise form last year figure. Fashion was the most-shopped category in terms of volume.
This is a 71 per cent rise number of online shoppers in compare to last year. In 2017, 14 million people purchased online in a month-long festive season, from Oct 9 to Nov 8.


The rise in sales majorly contributed by aggressive discounts and marketing campaigns by e-tailers like Amazon and Flipkart.
The tier 2 cities customers climbed to 11 million from 5 million in last year. The report, which Entrackr has access to, also outlined a decline in online shoppers from metros and tier-1 cities.

This year festive month clocked $4.3 billion in total GMV as compared to $3 billion last year.
Another study by Oath revealing consumers choices and behaviour during the online shopping season, has pointed out that online sales have increased about 29 per cent in the festive season in last one year.
In India, the online festive season primarily starts with Dussehra around October and goes till Diwali. E-tailers like Flipkart and Amazon generate a big part of their yearly sales during the festive period. Flipkart and Amazon India both accounted for about 83 per cent of this year’s overall festive season sales.
