MC Mary Kom defeated Ukraine’s Hanna Okhota and her sixth title in the Women’s World Boxing Championship, becoming the tournament’s most successful boxer.

Mary Kom has done it again!

India’s boxing legend MC Mary Kom bagged her sixth gold medal at the Women’s World Boxing Championship by defeating Ukraine’s Hanna Okhota in the 48kg light flyweight. The 35-year-old won the match in a unanimous 5-0 lead.

Mary won her first gold medal exactly 16 years ago, and this win makes her the most successful boxer of the World Boxing Championship to date.

Her last gold medal win was at the 2010 World Boxing Championship in the same category, says The Indian Express.

Speaking to the media after her semi-final win, Mary Kom said

I have beaten the North Korean opponent in the Asian Championships last year and that time it was a one-sided bout. But win or lose, every boxer always learn and I think she has learned (from that bout). At the same time, I also have learned and I came prepared to defend and counter. I am happy that I am in the final.

Mary, who is often referred to as “Magnificent Mary”, had defeated Hanna in Poland in the past. She has been affectionately nicknamed as such since she is the first Indian woman boxer to have won a bronze medal in Olympics as well as a gold medal in the Asian Games. At present, she is also a member of the Rajya Sabha.

The Manipur-based champion is being applauded all over social media for this brilliant win.
