Depression over Bay of Bengal likely to become low-intensity cyclone by October 24

The depression over the Bay of Bengal, which is projected to develop into a low-intensity cyclonic storm by October 24, is currently positioned around 610 km south of Paradip in Odisha, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

IMD’s recent bulletin has outlined the potential trajectory and intensity of the weather system, suggesting that it may intensify into a deep depression within the next 24 hours. The forecast indicates that the system will initially move northwestwards in the following 12 hours and eventually progress towards the coasts of Bangladesh and West Bengal over the subsequent three days.

However, the IMD has indicated that the expected cyclonic storm may be relatively weak, resulting in a marginal impact on Odisha. The anticipated effects are expected to bring about light to moderate rainfall in the region. Weather scientist Umashankar Dash from the Regional Meteorological Centre has provided insights into the system’s position, noting that it will likely remain approximately 200 km away from the state’s coastline. This suggests that the impact on Odisha is likely to be limited, with minimal disruption anticipated due to the system’s projected distance from the coastal area.

According to Dash, there has been a warning issued to fishermen advising them to refrain from venturing into the sea until October 25 due to the expected rough conditions. Moreover, the IMD has specifically cautioned farmers to ensure the timely harvesting of mature paddy crops by October 23. This precautionary measure has been recommended as certain parts of coastal Odisha may encounter light to moderate rainfall as a result of the weather system’s influence.

The anticipated impact of the system suggests the likelihood of light to moderate rainfall at select locations in coastal Odisha on October 23, followed by the expectation of similar conditions at numerous places on both October 24 and 25. These alerts and forecasts have been provided to help residents, farmers, and fishermen prepare for and mitigate any potential risks or disruptions associated with the approaching weather system.
