Mahua Moitra gets new role in TMC amid ‘cash for query’ probe by Lok Sabha ethics panel

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has appointed Mahua Moitra as the district president of Krishnanagar, the constituency she represents in the Lok Sabha. This move comes amid developments in the ‘cash for query’ case, where the Lok Sabha ethics panel adopted a report recommending her expulsion.

Expressing gratitude, Moitra posted on social media, saying, “Thank you @MamataOfficial and @AITCofficial for appointing me District President of Krishnanagar (Nadia North). Will always work with the party for the people of Krishnanagar.”

TMC MP Mahua Moitra is accused of sharing her parliament portal login credentials with a businessman.

This appointment indicates the party’s continued support for Moitra despite the ethical concerns raised. It also emphasizes her importance within the Trinamool Congress and highlights the party’s decision to entrust her with a leadership role at the district level. The statement suggests her commitment to serving the people of Krishnanagar and working in alignment with the party’s goals.

The Lok Sabha ethics panel has submitted a comprehensive 500-page report based on its investigation into allegations against Mahua Moitra. She is accused of sharing her Parliament portal login credentials with a businessman, an action considered unethical by the panel.

The ethics committee’s report is scheduled to be tabled in the Lok Sabha on the first day of the Winter Session, which is December 4. Officials familiar with the matter have indicated that the government plans to move a motion in the House on the same day, seeking the expulsion of Mahua Moitra.

This development indicates a significant and consequential step in response to the allegations against Moitra. The tabling of the report and the subsequent motion for expulsion will bring this issue to the forefront of parliamentary proceedings during the Winter Session, potentially leading to further debates and discussions on the matter.

Mahua Moitra has vehemently denied the allegations against her, terming them as baseless. In an interview with PTI, she alleged that the ethics panel report was driven by a nexus between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Adani Group.

Moitra stated, “In the 500-page report, there was no mention of cash, because there isn’t any. Basically, everything is about not questioning. The Modi-Adani nexus is running the government, and because of this, the issue is how not to question… They are in panic. Adani did a coal scam. In any country, this would have brought down the government. Modi in his heart knows this. So they are desperate to keep this hidden as long as possible.”

Her comments suggest that she views the allegations as politically motivated and part of a larger narrative involving the government and corporate interests. The assertion of a nexus between the Prime Minister and the Adani Group adds a political dimension to the controversy surrounding the ethics panel report, reflecting the heightened tensions and divergent perspectives within the political landscape.

Mahua Moitra, in her statement, suggests that she believes the allegations and the ethics panel report against her are part of a larger plan. According to her, the intention is to silence individuals who speak out and potentially put them in jail to maintain a certain narrative until January 22, when the inauguration of the Ram Mandir is scheduled.

Moitra’s perspective implies a strategic political move to control narratives and potentially stifle dissent or criticism. She asserts that the timing of these actions is part of a plan to ensure that the BJP benefits politically, particularly around the significant event of the Ram Mandir inauguration.

These statements highlight the complex interplay of politics, timing, and strategic considerations within the broader political landscape. The allegations against her, in this view, are seen as a tool to divert attention or suppress certain voices during a critical period in the political calendar.
