Goyal revealed that Zomato is on a mission to build rest points for the well-being of delivery executives of various companies. He shared a picture of Zomato and even Swiggy delivery executives sitting on the chairs, charging their phones and also eating some snacks at this space.

In the following tweet, Goyal reveals that the rest points are excellent points of convergence for all delivery partners, even those belonging to Zypp. He further stated that it was a perfect opportunity to interact with the delivery partners’ community and get feedback from them.

The Zomato rest points offer a flurry of facilities like clean washrooms, first-aid kits, phone-charging stations and drinking water. At the moment, there are two rest points nestled in Gurgaon. From here on, Zonato plans to set up more all over the country.

Netizens have welcomed this move wholeheartedly. Twitterati, @tweetsfromnivi lauded the initiative and highlighted that women delivery executives need clean washrooms to feel safe and comfortable. Another Netizen, @poojawk, highlighted that delivery executives in Pune don’t wear helmets and urged Zomato to conduct random checks on this.

Goyal did not say how many Rest Points would be set up or where they would be. “We acknowledge that delivery partners confront various difficulties while working, such as navigating traffic and delivering goods in lousy weather.

According to Goyal’s blog post, “In keeping with our commitment to their wellbeing, we are thrilled to launch The Shelter Project,” under which the company has begun constructing public infrastructure (known as Rest Points) to assist the entire gig economy and delivery partners of various enterprises.

Goyal continued, “We think that by giving a room for all delivery partners to rest, recharge, and take time for themselves, we can foster an improved environment that encourages their physical and mental wellness.”

A study that was conducted by the government think tank NITI Aayog found that there were 77 lakh individuals working in the gig economy in India in the year 2020–21, and it was expected that there would be 2.35 crore people employed in this sector by the year 2029–2030.

Those who are hired outside of the typical employer-employee relationship, such as delivery boys, domestic servants, consultants, bloggers, and others, face a range of challenges relating to social security, gratuities, minimum wage protection, and working hours.

The launch of The Shelter Project comes at a time when gig workers in India have faced criticism for poor working conditions. A report by research firm Fairwork India in December 2022 assessed digital platforms on five principles: pay, conditions, contracts, management, and representation.

Platforms like Uber, Ola, Dunzo and others were alleged to provide the poorest conditions for gig workers in India. However, Urban Company, Tata Group-owned BigBasket, e-commerce marketplace Flipkart, and food-delivery platform Swiggy received higher marks.

Zomato’s Rest Points initiative is a positive development for the welfare of gig workers, providing a safe and comfortable space for them to rest and recharge between jobs. As the gig economy continues to grow, initiatives such as these will be important in promoting gig workers’ physical and mental well-being.
