India Looking to Step Up Its AI Game in Defence

India is not likely to miss the bus in the global race to develop artificial intelligence based weapon and surveillance systems for future use.
The defense consortium of the country is now moving towards the expertise of AI in this area by taking hint from countries like the US and China that are focusing on artificial intelligence and machine learning to be able to make Lethal Autonomous Weapon Systems (LAWS).
It was even stressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the DefExpo in Chennai on 11th April 2018 to be prepared for this new regime change. “New and emerging technologies like AI and Robotics will perhaps be the most important determinants of defensive and offensive capabilities for any defense force in the future. India, with its leadership in information technology domain, would strive to use this technology tilt to its advantage,” PM said.
The government is leaning on a multi-task force, which was set up in February. This 17-member workforce was appointed to formulate plans and strategies for “Use of AI for national security and defense needs”. The workforce is being headed by Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran. The workforce also includes IIT and IISc professors as well as two and three-star generals and representatives from ISRO, DRDO and Atomic Energy Commission. National Cyber Security Coordinator Gulshan Rai is also a part of the team, working together with several motives in mind ranging from “establishing strategical obviation in the region and conceptualizing prospective evolutionary weapons” to “producing intelligent automatic robotic systems and strengthening cybersecurity”.
The task force will provide suggestions on how to make India powerful in AI, in terms of naval, land systems nuclear, cyber, aviation warfare zones.
DRDO’s Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (CAIR) is also putting in efforts to produce different types of intelligent robotic systems. For more such news stay tuned with inventiva.co.in.
