The Indian multinational conglomerate, Tata Group, is said to be nearing a deal to become the first Indian company to manufacture the iPhone, Apple’s iconic smartphone, according to recent reports. According to persons with knowledge of the situation, Tata Group, India’s largest conglomerate, is close to reaching a deal to buy an Apple Inc. supplier’s plant as early as August. If successful, this would be the first time a local business would participate in producing iPhones. The persons, who asked to remain anonymous because the negotiations are confidential, said that an acquisition of the Wistron Corp. facility in southern Karnataka state, which may be worth more than $600 million, would end around a year of talks—more than 10,000 people labour at the factory, which makes the most recent iPhone 14 model.

According to the sources, Wistron has agreed to supply iPhones worth at least $1.8 billion from the facility during the fiscal year ending in March 2024 to get state-backed financial incentives. It also intended to treble the plant’s staff by the following year. As Wistron departs the Indian iPhone market, Tata is prepared to uphold its agreements.

Launching an Indian iPhone is anticipated to give Apple’s initiatives to expand technology production in South Asia and diversify its product base outside China more impetus. In the three months ending on June 30, Wistron shipped about $500 million worth of iPhones from India. Foxconn Technology Group and Pegatron Corp., two of Apple’s major Taiwanese suppliers, have also increased production locally.

For Apple, partnering with Tata Group could be a strategic move that opens up several beneficial prospects. At its plant on hundreds of acres of land in Tamil Nadu, it already manufactures iPhone chassis or the metal framework of the gadget.
