7-Day LOCKDOWN extension: West Bengal

The terror of coronavirus has strengthened its roots all over the world. India is one of the worst-hit nations.  The whole country is taking preventive measures but the state of West Bengal has repeatedly reported the careless attitude of people. So, in this scenario where corona cases are growing rapidly in the state CM Mamata Banerjee took a step of imposing total shutdown for 7 days in all the containment zones in the state.  The Chief Minister further stated that after reviewing the situations of the zone, the lockdown may be extended if needed.

Her quoted statement was “This lockdown in the containment zones in West Bengal will continue for seven days from 5 PM Thursday. Will review the situation after seven days and then decide the next course of action on lockdown.”

She mentioned that if the situation gets worse, then the lockdown in these zones will be extended further.  Therefore, the people are asked to maintain social distance and take necessary precautions like wearing masks by Ms. Banerjee.

The police have been directed to be strict with those who are not obeying the declared norms and if people are found outside their homes without masks, then they should be sent back home.

The decision of expanding the areas under lockdown provision and imposing tougher restrictions from the 9th of July has been taken by the state to stem the spike of coronavirus cases. The state earlier decided for imposing complete lockdown in all the chosen containment zones across the Bengal from the 9th of July.

Too many areas were included in the South 24 Paraganas district’s containment zone list and that lead to Banerjee’s rejection of the complete list. In a televised meeting with doctors from government hospitals and her officials, she examined the proposed list and she said that “You can’t lock down a whole district.” she further aggressively continues and questions “Who has prepared this list? has it been done on the basis of voters list? you have included entire civic wards. Very bad! Review it!’

The containment zones list of North 24 Parganas, Howrah and Kolkata have been redrawn by Banerjee. She further mentioned how Siliguri in North Bengal and Malda need to be put under focus points as those areas are witnessing a sharp rise in COVID-19 cases.
