PM Modi spoke at the High-Level Segment of ECONOMIC & SOCIAL COUNCIL!!

Yesterday, on the 17th of July, for the first time since the nation’s last overwhelming election as a non-permanent member of the Security Council that was held on the 17th of June, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed to the broader UN membership. 

Multilateralism after COVID 19: What kind of UN do we need at the 75th anniversary” was the theme of the High-Level Segment of the ECOSOC. Matching with the 75th Anniversary of UN’s founding, the theme also resonates with India’s priority for its upcoming membership of the UN Security Council.

Nowadays, everything is taking a digital turn because of the circumstances created by COVID 19. Hence Prime Minister also addressed the session via video conferencing.

  • One hundred and ninety-three countries were brought together by the UN. Along with its membership, he says his expectations from the organization have also increased. 
  • He proudly says that the united fight against the deadly coronavirus has helped the nation to extends its medical and other assistance to around one hundred and fifty countries. Through this the remembered the support Government of India and India’s pharma companies provided for ensuring medicine supplies to other countries and coordinating a joint response strategy among SAARC countries.
  • He claimed that because of the country’s indigenous efforts, the country is again playing an important role in achieving the target of Agenda 2030 and Sustainable Development Goals. He said that the nation is also supporting other developing countries to meet their sustainable development goals. Talking about Sustainable Development Goals, he mentioned about country’s successful improvement in socio-economic indicators of its vast population, which also has a significant impact on the “goals'” target. 
  • He describes the possession of a holistic approach towards the engagement of states, local governments, civil societies, communities, and the people of the nation. Therefore, he says the motto of “Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas” which means together will all, development for all, the trust of all. This clearly gets along with the principle of Sustainable Developmental Goals of keeping none behind. 
  • PM Modi also threw light on the country’s focus on biodiversity conservation and environmental sustainability and recalled India’s leading role in the establishment of the International Solar Alliance and the Coalition of Disaster Resilient Infrastructure.
  • He tells about the program named ‘Housing for All‘. This program will ensure that every Indian resident will be provided a shelter to cover their head by the year 2022 when the nation will be celebrating 75 years of independence. 
  • On the One hundred and fiftieth birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the nation can be celebrated as the nation has achieved full sanitation coverage in six lakh villages. Within five years, ten crore toilets were built which improved the rural sanitation cover from 38% to 100%. He smoothly tucked in the fact of Swach Bharat Mission’s victory.
  • Coronavirus pandemic has severely tested resilience in all the countries.
  • He also mentioned about the flagship of Ayushman Bharat scheme.
  • India’s women are being empowered by the massive awareness generation programs. The country has conquered gender parity in elementary and secondary education. Around seventy million women residing in rural areas are a part of self-help groups under the livelihood missions.
  • He exclaims about the harmonious nature of the country.
  • Lastly, he said that in this fight against coronavirus, the country’s grass-roots health system is helping India to ensure one of the best recovery rates in the world.

This was the 2nd time Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the ECOSOC. Last time he delivered the keynote address at the seventieth anniversary of the ECOSOC in 2016’s January month.
