World’s cleanest BS6 petrol-diesel supplies started, IOC Became India’s first company to do so

Indian Oil Corporation (OIL), India’s largest oil firm, has started supplying BS6 emission standard fuel. BS6 petrol-diesel is the cleanest fuel in the world. IOC has become the first company to supply BS6 fuel. The entire country will adopt BS6 fuel from 1 April. IOC has started supplying this fuel to 28000 petrol pumps two weeks ago. BS6 standard petrol diesel contains very small amounts of sulfur, which is less hazardous to health and the environment.

Within a week the entire country will switch to this cleanest fuel
Indian Oil chairman Sanjeev Singh said that we have started supplying BS-6 grade fuel across the country. Our 28 thousand petrol pumps have been dispensing it for more than a week. Bharat Petroleum (BPCL), Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL) are also supplying BS6 fuel and within a week the entire country will switch to the cleanest fuel. With the introduction of IOC supply, India has joined select countries where low sulfur clean fuels are used. India has shifted from BS-4 to BS-6 in just 3 years. The special thing is that switching in clean fuel BS-6 is happening at a time when the whole world is in the grip of corona virus epidemic.

Reduce sulfur emissions
Each emission standard has to reduce the amount of sulfur with the smoke emanating from petrol and diesel vehicles. Petrol vehicles could emit 150 mg per kg of sulfur under the BS3 standard. Which has been reduced to 10 mg per kg in BS 6. Similarly, diesel vehicles could emit 350 mg per kg of sulfur under BS3 standard norms, which has been reduced to 10 mg per kg.

When did Bharat Stage Norms come into force
BS Norms have never been implemented simultaneously since 2000 in India. These were implemented in a phased manner. They were first implemented in metros and select cities. After this Tier 2 and Tier 3 have been implemented in cities. However, in the year 2020, BS6 emission is being implemented simultaneously in the entire country.

BS1 was implemented simultaneously throughout the country in the year 2000

BS2 was first implemented in a phased manner in Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. Subsequently, in April 2003, BS2 was implemented in 13 other cities.

BS3 was implemented in 13 cities including Delhi NCR in April 2005.

Subsequently, in April 2010, it was implemented nationwide.

BS4 was implemented in April 2010 in select 13 cities of the country including Delhi NCR. Subsequently, in April 2017, it has been implemented nationwide.

BS6 implemented directly except for BS5.

BS6 is being implemented nationwide in April 2020.

What is the difference between BS4 and BS6
Under BS4 emission norms, the engine of the vehicle is designed to remove the amount of sulfur from the smoke emanating from it based on the Indian government’s fixed scale. Low sulfur fuel (diesel) is used for this. For this, the fuel grade is decided by the government. Grade 6 based fuel BS6 fuel will be introduced nationwide from April 1, 2020. The introduction of BS-6 rules will reduce carbon emissions. Earlier from 1 April 2017, the Petroleum Ministry started selling BS-IV grade petrol and diesel across the country. Presently BS-4 fuels are being supplied in North India including Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, parts of Rajasthan and Western Uttar Pradesh, while BS-3 fuel is being supplied in the rest of the country.
