According to recent research by economists at Analysis Group, an astounding $1.1 trillion in developer billings and sales were made possible by the App Store ecosystem in 2022. Ahead of the Worldwide Developer Conference, Apple has issued a study outlining the revenues of its app ecosystem over the course of the previous year.

The report concludes that the App Store has shown to be very resilient and strong, with a 29% increase in billings and sales year over year. 

According to the figures, developers and companies earned more than 90% of the income produced, with no commission going to Apple. According to the research, $910 billion in billings and sales were produced by the sale of physical products and services, $109 billion by in-app advertising, and $104 billion by digital goods and services. This adds up to a startling $1.1 trillion in total.  

A comprehensive investigation was carried out to investigate the main parameters that contributed to the growth of the App Store ecosystem. The research shows a growth in advertising spending on social media and retail applications and a jump in demand for ride-hailing and travel services. Between 2019 and 2020, developer billings and sales rose by 27%; between 2020 and 2021, by 27%; and between 2021 and 2022, by 29%.

Particularly small developers have great success on the App Store, outperforming bigger developers by increasing their income by 71% between 2020 and 2022. Analysis Group’s economists consider growth rates of this nature to be encouraging signs of a thriving market characterised by vitality, innovation, and competition.

Billings and sales for American developers have surged by more than 80% overall since 2019. Since 2019, developers’ billings and revenues in Europe have increased by an above-average 116 per cent. Furthermore, businesses all around the world adopted enterprise applications in substantial numbers. These applications had a stunning increase in popularity in 2022, making them one of the fastest-expanding categories of digital products and services.

The widespread expansion of developer companies across all app categories is a sign of how much Apple consumers have grown to rely on their favourite applications. Apps are assisting individuals all over the world to stay connected, creative, and engaged, whether for gaming or productivity, education or social networking. 

The App Store’s success may be due to its accessibility and worldwide reach, both essential elements. Thanks to the inclusion of over 195 local payment methods and 44 currencies across 175 storefronts, developers may now interact with people worldwide. According to the survey, there was a considerable increase in app downloads in 2022, with more than 50% occurring in app stores outside the creators’ native nations. 

The demand for app categories like travel and ride-hailing significantly increased due to the relaxation of regulations in certain jurisdictions. In 2022, sales of iOS travel applications increased by an impressive 84 per cent, while those of ride-hailing apps increased by a sizable 45 per cent. The food and grocery app categories also showed some of the greatest growth rates. Sales of groceries have more than tripled, while sales of meal delivery and pickup using iOS apps have more than doubled since 2019.

The investigation also showed that in 2022 there would be over 650 million average weekly visitors globally to the App Store, which continues to draw a sizable user base. Every week, users downloaded and redownloaded apps more than 747 million and 1.5 billion times, demonstrating the platform’s continued appeal.
