Know in-depth about the New-Age BTech in Materials Engineering course at IIT Delhi

With JEE Main and JEE Advanced exams concluded successfully, all eyes are now on the various BTech courses to study. The BTech in Materials Engineering is one of the new-age technical courses. The course spans over four years in duration and divided into 8 semesters. The approximate total tuition fee for the course is 8.7 Lakhs INR. IIT Delhi boasts of excellent placements with average salaries touching 16 Lakhs PA. Down here, we will share some details about the BTech Materials Engineering to understand the course better.

BTech in Materials Engineering – The Department

The BTech in Materials Engineering was launched recently by the Department of Materials Science Engineering of IIT Delhi. With its inception in January 2018, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, which is also popularly known as DMSE, has successfully developed and undertaken material research for inevitable end uses. Now, with the introduction of this BTech course, another feather in the cap is added.

It all started in 1993 when the centre for polymer science and engineering, also known as CPSE, emerged as an independent entity and continued to be the leading centre for teaching and research in new frontiers in polymer science technology. After this, the merging of CPSE and DMSE led to the undergraduate program’s launch to maintain and expand the material research. The department is the only material research and engineering department in the Delhi-NCR region. It only offered 40 seats in that respective year for candidates who wish to pursue a career in this field of knowledge.

The department is established with a purpose to achieve. The goals of the department are:

  • To provide frontier education in the field of Material Science and Engineering.
  • To achieve excellence in education and research to meet the rising demand of society.
  • Giving exposure to candidates broadly to the research-intensive curriculum for enhancing their skills that suit the global market.
  • To provide an environment that allows candidates to innovate, create, and implement new ideas that bring team spirit to them and foster young and fresh talents.
  • To provide high standards of professional ethics.

Department of Material Science and Engineering is further divided into sections mentioned below:

  • Metals and Alloys
  • Polymers
  • Materials Modelling
  • Functional Materials

The department initially offered two significant programs, i.e., Research and MTech, where the research program is further divided into Ph.D. and Mrs (R) programs. Students with a BTech and BE background in materials or Metallurgy Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Ceramics Engineering are eligible to enroll themselves in these programs.

BTech in Materials Engineering by IIT Delhi

The undergraduate program, BTech in Materials Engineering, was launched by offering 40 seats in total to the aspiring candidates. Students who successfully qualified for the JEE Advanced examination in the year 2020 are also eligible to apply for this BTech program. The program focuses on bringing forth next-generation technology and innovation for core industrial sectors, academia, and entrepreneurship. The Head of the Material Engineering Department, Josemon Jacob, stated that candidates taking up the program could make their career path to any streams such as aerospace, manufacturing, defence oil and gas, automotive and petrochemical industries.

BTech In Materials Engineering: Structure Of The Program

The course curriculum has been designed to groom young talents at the early stages of their career. It has a foundation that offers electives in materials and engineering or a combination of two, which would ideally suit the industry demand.

To meet the industry’s specifications, it becomes vital to train human resources at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. The BTech program has been well designed to foster in-depth knowledge, teach problem-solving ability skills, and maintain a curriculum balance.

The BTech program also offers numerous co-curricular activities that also give every individual learning opportunities to explore the field beyond classrooms. The department, apart from providing the BTech program, also provides degrees like Ph.D., Ms(R), MTech too. Interested candidates can find the structure in a tabular form below:

The BTech in Material Engineering curriculum also includes relationships between the structure and the properties in various kinds and quality of materials. Popular materials such as metals, polymers, electronic materials, biomaterials, and many others are demanded by the industries. The department strives to innovate ways to reduce costs, whereas the profits can be maximized.

The statement issued by the Indian Institute of Technology states that the insights gained from the curriculum can be used to quantify the vital engineering material properties as well as guides them to explore new designs and materials that can be used or discovered for industrial function and applications.

BTech in Materials Engineering – Courses that are included

The salient courses offered under the B.Tech program to the latest admissions in the year 2020 are mentioned below:

  • Basics of Material Science and Engineering
  • Advanced Materials Characterization
  • Advanced Manufacturing Processes
  • Polymers and Soft Materials
  • Metallica and LightWeight Materials
  • Functional and Electronic Materials
  • Computational Materials
