On Thursday, Delhi’s Rouse Avenue court granted regular bail to Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who is the outgoing chief of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and a Member of Parliament (MP) from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
He was facing allegations of sexual harassment involving women wrestlers. Prior to this, the court had provided him with a two-day interim bail on Tuesday.
In the case of alleged sexual harassment of women wrestlers, the court granted bail to Vinod Tomar, who is the suspended assistant secretary of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), along with Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the outgoing chief of WFI and a Member of Parliament (MP) from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Both were required to furnish a personal bail bond of Rs 25,000 each to secure their release from custody.
In addition to the bail amount, the court imposed several conditions on the accused individuals to ensure the integrity of the legal proceedings and the safety of the complainants and witnesses. Some of these conditions may include:
1. Non-interference with complainants and witnesses: Both Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and Vinod Tomar are prohibited from directly or indirectly influencing, threatening, or inducing the complainants and witnesses involved in the case. The Delhi Police filed a charge sheet against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who is a six-time Member of Parliament, on June 15. The charge sheet includes allegations under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Specifically, the charges against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh include:
1. Section 354: Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty.
2. Section 354A: Sexual harassment.
3. Section 354D: Stalking.
4. Section 506: Criminal intimidation.
Additionally, Vinod Tomar, the suspended assistant secretary of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), has also been charged in the case. The charges against Vinod Tomar include offenses under IPC sections 109, 354, 354A, and 506.
These charges reflect the serious nature of the allegations of sexual harassment and related offenses brought against both individuals. The legal proceedings will now progress with the granting of bail to Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and Vinod Tomar, while the case continues to be investigated and presented before the court.
