Bengaluru college girls donate hair to show support to cancer patients

About 50 students of Mount Carmel College donated their hair to make 350 wigs for cancer patients at the Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology.

Donating hair is a great way to show our support to people battling cancer. While hair fall is one of the major side-effects during the cancer treatment, a wig can give a lot of self-confidence and hope to people struggling with emotional challenges.

In one such noble initiative, a campaign called ‘Gift Hair, Gift Confidence’ was organised by the Cherian Foundation in Bengaluru recently. The campaign was instituted on World Cancer Survivor day on June 5.

About 50 students from Mount Carmel College in Bengaluru donated their hair to make about 350 wigs. A girl also tonsured her head for the cause.

The hair will be given to the female cancer patients who are undergoing treatment at the Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology in Bengaluru.

Dr Ramachandra C, Director, Kidwai Hospital, told the The New Indian Express,

“The hair loss is temporary. Those who can afford can have their wigs made from their own hair before they start losing it in the second round of chemotherapy. But those from villages don’t have this option and, now, they too can wear wigs as long as they continue to lose their hair.”

The hospital authorities said that after the patients are discharged, the wigs will be sanitised and given to other patients.

Sara Benjamin Cherian, Trustee, Cherian Foundation, said:

“The campaign aims at collecting hair donations directly from donors to make natural human hair wigs for distribution to patients. This campaign wants to boost the confidence of women detected with cancer to step forward and avail treatment.”

The foundation has also come up with cancer awareness camps, built a park for cancer-affected children, and has mobilised funds to make wigs for cancer survivors, said Sara.
