Microsoft India signs MoU with Sikkim; plans to focus on Northeast India


Microsoft India announced that it plans to leverage AI and cloud technologies for digital transformation of the eight states of Northeast India.

Microsoft India signed a MoU with Sikkim on Thursday to revamp the education system of the state. The Indian subsidiary of the American software company also plans to increase its investments in the eight states of Northeast India. Besides focussing on education and transportation, it will also leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) and cloud to enable citizen services.


Manish Prakash, General Manager of Public Sector, Microsoft India, said,

“E-governance is the best way to get the benefits of technology to all the residents of Northeast India. We believe the next step of growth will be to leverage the power of the cloud, artificial intelligence, IoT and data.”

Under the MoU, the company will be reforming the government schools of Sikkim through their Innovative Schools Programme. It will be integrating Microsoft’s IT content and courseware in the state board curriculum for students from class 6 to class 10.

It plans to build teacher capacity through its Educator Network and Innovative Educator Network by training 100 trainers nominated by the government.

RB Subba, HRDD Minister, said,

“We are committed to harnessing the power of technology to transform e-governance and core sectors in Sikkim and we are happy to partner with Microsoft.”

The company also plans to enhance digital literacy and digital citizenship by training a batch of 20 District Education Officers (DEO) and Principals of government schools nominated by the government.

Microsoft claims that its cloud services have powered close to 150 government departments and State-Owned Enterprises across states in India.
