Because of the increase in the consumption, the prices of petrol and diesel have started to rise in the major metropolitan cities of the country.

On Monday, the prices of petrol and diesel were increased, the price of petrol increased by 3 rupees 26 paise and the price of diesel increased by 2 rupees 51 paise, in Chennai, and now on Tuesday, the national capital Delhi has also recorded a sharp increase in the prices of petrol and diesel. In Delhi, the price of petrol has increased by Rs 1.67 per litre on Tuesday. Due to which one litre of the petrol in Delhi will now be sold at Rs 71.26 per litre. At the same time, the price of diesel in Delhi has increased by Rs 7.10 per litre. With this boom, diesel is now being sold in Delhi at Rs 69.39 per litre.

This increase in the prices of petrol and diesel have been observed due to an increase in VAT by the Delhi government. VAT on petrol in Delhi has been increased from 27 percent to 30 percent. Whereas VAT on diesel has almost doubled. It was earlier 16.75 percent, which has now been increased to 30 percent. The Delhi government has suffered a huge loss in revenue due to the lockdown. Therefore, the government wants to increase its revenue by increasing VAT on petrol and diesel.

The nationwide lockdown has been extended for the third time. The lockdown has been extended to May 17 for two weeks. However, there are also many exemptions to lockdown according to red, orange, and green zones. Due to these exemptions, the consumption of petrol and diesel in the country is likely to increase. Because of the increase in consumption, many state governments are increasing VAT on petrol and diesel. Earlier, petrol and diesel prices remained unchanged in many big metros of the country for about 50 days.

The Haryana government has also recently increased the tax on petrol and diesel. The Haryana government has increased the tax by one rupee per litre on petrol and 1.1 rupees per litre on diesel. At the same time, VAT on petrol and diesel was increased on Monday by the Tamil Nadu government. This led to a rise in the price of petrol in Chennai by Rs 3.25 per litre and diesel by Rs 2.50 per litre.

Talking about the price of petrol and diesel in other big metros of the country, on Tuesday, petrol in Kolkata is being sold at its old price of Rs 73.30 per litre and diesel at Rs 65.62 per litre. At the same time, petrol in Mumbai is being sold at Rs 76.31 per litre and diesel at Rs 66.21 per litre. Talking about Chennai, petrol is available at Rs 75.54 per litre and diesel at Rs 68.22 per litre.

Talking about Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, petrol is available here at Rs 71.92 per litre and diesel at Rs 62.87 per litre. At the same time, in Patna, the capital of Bihar petrol is being sold at Rs 74.25 per litre and diesel at Rs 66.82 per litre. Apart from this, Rajasthan’s capital Jaipur is selling petrol at Rs 76.70 per litre and diesel at Rs 69.82 per litre.
