Enrolment into the medical schools and the law institutes are rapidly on fire, owing to the growing healthcare concerns plus the increasing demand for the law and order to be successfully regarded in the Indian nation.

Almost 5,543 higher education institutions were assessed this year by NIRF across 13 categories viz., overall, universities, colleges, research institutions, engineering, management, pharmacy, medical, dental, law, architecture and planning, agriculture and allied sciences, and innovation.

NIRF evaluated the participating institutions on five criteria, comprising of 30 per cent weightage for teaching, learning, and resources; 30 per cent weightage for research and professional practice; 20 per cent weightage for
graduation outcomes; 10 per cent for perception; and final 10 per cent for outreach and inclusivity.

Here’s a look into the top 5 institutes ranking in the medical category and top 5 in the law category.

1. All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi

AIIMS, Delhi has secured the top rank once again, a label it carried for past 6 years, leaving behind the rest of the institutions with a score of 94.32. With 20 functional AIIMS campuses across the nation, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi had welcomed 734 new faculty members with 303 students pursuing doctoral program till FY2021-22. It boasts of 3,279 beds in the hospital overall, with average occupancy of 2,300 per day, and average OPD attendance of 8,000 in the calendar year 2021. In FY2021-22, AIIMS, Delhi undertook 609 sponsored projects with 35 funding agencies that escalated the funding rewards to more than Rs. 101 Crores.

In the overall category, AIIMS Delhi has bagged the 6th rank, jumping from last year’s 9th position.

2. Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh

Called as the ‘Institute of National Importance’, PGIMER stood still on the second position as last year at 81.10 score, with additional intake of 643 faculty members and 270 PhD students on-roll up to 2021-22. The Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh involved in 951 sponsored research during the year 2021-22, and received funding from 115 agencies with total amount going up to more than Rs. 65 Crores. PGIMER Chandigarh had an average of 4,682 OPD attendance, with average bed occupancy of 1,619 per day out of total 2,233 number of beds for the same calendar year.

3. Christian Medical College, Vellore

The private Christian community-run CMC in Vellore maintained its position at the top medical institutes at #3, exclaiming a score of 75.29, and marked the entry of 846 new faculty members and 16 students pursuing their PhD by the year 2021-22. Out of the two CMC hosted in India, Christian Medical College, Vellore took part in 511 sponsored projects receiving funds from 55 agencies of about more than Rs. 110 Crores. It showed an average bed occupancy of 1,657 per day out of the total number of 3,013 beds in the hospital, and OPD attendance on an average of 7,190 for the year 2021-22.

4. National Institute of Medical Health and Neuro Sciences, Bengaluru

The apex center for neurosciences and mental health across the nation, NIMHANS sustained its fourth spot in comparison to the previous year ranking with a score of 72.46. It had 245 PhD students graduating from their doctoral research in 2021-22, and also witnessed the introduction of 249 new faculty members in the same year.

Out of the total 800 beds in the hospital, the National Institute of Medical Health and Neuro Sciences in Bangalore has 589 patients occupying the bed on an average per day. Along the same lines, the OPD attendance in the calendar year 2021 surfaced up to 1,340. NIMHANS Bengaluru participated in 359 research projects sponsored by 99 funding agencies, collecting a total of Rs. 52 Crores.

5. Jawaharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research, Puducherry

Moving one position up from last year, JIPMER located in the Union Territory of India, came up with 72.10 score, swiftly behind the NIMHANS in the top 50 medical institutions. Patil Vidyapeeth (Pune), Siksha O Anusandhan (Bhubaneswar), All India Institute of Medical Sciences (Bhubaneswar), Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences (Chennai), St. John’s Medical College (Bengaluru), and S.R.M. Stating a score of 60.44, Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (Chennai) followed suit with the others ranking below as All India Institute of Medical Sciences (Rishikesh), Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (New Delhi), Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research (Kolkata), Datta Meghe Institute of Higher Education and Research (Wardha), Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (Bhubaneswar), All India Institute of Medical Sciences (Patna), Aligarh Muslim University, Jamia Hamdard (New Delhi), and Kasturba Medical College (Mangalore) conclude the list till top 30.

Lady Hardinge Medical College (New Delhi) comes in at #31 with a score of 55.78, and is followed by Govt. Medical College & Hospital (Chandigarh), Maulana Azad Medical College (Delhi), Maharishi Markandeshwar (Ambala), Dayanand Medical College (Ludhiana), University College of Medical Sciences (Delhi), JSS Medical College (Mysuru), All India Institute of Medical Sciences (Bhopal), All India Institute of Medical Sciences (Raipur), and PSG Institute of Medical Sciences & Research (Coimbatore) concluding the top 40 list.

The Gujarat Cancer & Research Institute showed up at the 41st position with a score of 52.61, and is closely pursued by Christian Medical College (Ludhiana), M.S. The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences claims to be one of the best elite national law schools of the nation, bringing in 66 new faculty members in 2021-22. The number of students pursuing PhD full-time during 2021-22 is an extensive 101, with 17 part-time positions. Established in 1999, WBNUJS accomplished 21 sponsored projects, receiving funds of more than Rs. 1 Crore by 6 funding agencies.

5. Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi

Among the top 30 best performing law institutes in the nation, Symbiosis Law School (Pune) turns in at #6 with 66.67 points, followed by Gujarat National Law University, Siksha O Anusandhan (Bhubaneswar), Indian Institute of Technology (Kharagpur), Babasheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (Lucknow), Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences (Chennai), Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (Bhubaneswar), Christ University (Bengaluru), Aligarh Muslim University, Shanmugha Arts Science Technology & Research Academy (Thanjavur), Lovely Professional University

The last 10 out of the top 30 law institutes across India starts with Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University (Lucknow) sweeping in with 50.90 points, followed by Banaras Hindu University (Varanasi), Amity University (Gurugram), National University of Study & Research in Law (Ranchi), Alliance University (Bengaluru), Army Institute of Law (Mohali), Nirma University (Ahmedabad), National Law University and Judicial Academy (Kamrup), Manipal University (Jaipur), and National Law University (Cuttack) finalizing the ranks at #30 with a score of 46.02.

NIRF Framework

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) Rankings for 2023 had been released by Rajkumar Ranjan Singh, the Minister of State For Education and External Affairs on 5 June 2023 virtually.

The NIRF framework, launched on 29 September 2015 by Minister of Education, outlines a methodology for ranking institutions across the Indian subcontinent to align with the nation’s culture and ethos.

NIRF was established to address the shortcomings of the International rankings that generally overlook country specific factors while assessing the universities.

The set of parameters chosen for the ranking are coherent, compact and inter-dependent as NIRF has also acknowledged the top-performing institutions with consistent rankings over the years.
