USA MQ-9 Reaper drone reportedly crashed into the Black Sea following colliding with a Russian Su-27 fighter jet, according to the US military. The collision is the first time a US aircraft has been brought down in a military maneuver by a Russian fighter plane since the Cold War ended. In a response to US charges, Russia’s defense ministry claimed it scrambled fighter planes after detecting a US drone over the Black Sea, but denied causing it to crash.

According to a statement released by US European Command, Russian Su-27 aircraft engaged in an unsafe and unprofessional intercept with a US Air Force MQ-9 over the Black Sea. It is an intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance unmanned aircraft. One of the Russian Su-27 aircraft collided with the MQ-9’s propeller, forcing USA forces to put the MQ-9 down in international seas.

According to the US Command, the Su-27s repeatedly poured gasoline on and flew in front of the MQ-9 in a dangerous, ecologically unsound, and unprofessional way. The Russians’ reckless and unprofessional behavior nearly caused both aircraft to crash, US command continued.

The MQ-9 aircraft was performing regular operations in international airspace when it was intercepted and damaged by a Russian aircraft, resulting in a crash and total loss of the MQ-9, said USA Air Force General James B. Hecker, commander of USA Air Forces Europe and Africa.

According to the region’s top USA military official, US and Allied aircraft will continue to fly in international airspace, and they urge the Russians to conduct themselves professionally and securely.

Russian Ambassador has been called.

The US State Department summoned Russia’s ambassador to the country, Anatoly Antonov, and made a strong protest in response to the occurrence. Later, speaking to the media, Antonov stated that US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, Karen Donfried, expressed the USA’s worries about the event and that they exchanged their thoughts on this topic.

Flames of a dispute between two superpowers.

With Russia’s takeover of Crimea in 2014, tensions have been building over the Black Sea between the Western military and Russia. After the start of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in February of last year, the United States and the United Kingdom increased reconnaissance and surveillance aircraft over the sea.

Some more signs of tensions between Russia and the USA!

In 2022, President Biden has crucially highlighted USA’s aims and ambitions following weeks of public discussion rife with doubt and anxiety about the United States’ intents and actions in the Ukraine War. It provides a plain, constructive approach—one that the world’s democracies should maintain—to opposing Russia’s assault on not only Ukraine, but also global peace, stability, and the rule of law. However, this short, positive articulation of the US purpose contrasts with negative aims targeted toward Russia, such as undermining its geostrategic position or power.

In another case, the USA has chosen to impose a 200% tax on Russian aluminum and derivatives beginning in March, as part of broader sanctions in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the White House said last month. The sanctions are being imposed as the world’s greatest economy, the United States, continues to take efforts to diminish Russia’s revenues over the ongoing conflict with Ukraine.

Is the end of one war going to signal the beginning of a new Cold War in the twenty-first century?

Though the drastic historical Cold War ended between USSR and the west, it seems that flames of the same are still ignited in the politics of both nations. This is because the ancient cold war continues to have an impact on current geopolitics. Both countries continue to have opposed geopolitical goals, significant defense expenditures, and foreign military outposts. Relations between Russia and the West hit a new height following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

U.S. and Russia on the Verge of “New Cold War”.

It is not like both the countries want tensions between them, but as the adage goes, ‘Two swords can’t fit into the same sheath’ similar seems the case between Russia and the West.  Let’s wait and see what transpires in the upcoming months of 2023.
