The Delhi Metro passengers have good news! Bottles of alcohol are now permitted for travellers to bring within the Delhi Metro. The action follows the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation’s (DMRC) amendment of the rules regarding the transport of alcohol within metro trains. Alcohol was only permitted on the Airport Express Line (AEL) until recently.

New Guidelines:

As of 2023, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has introduced revised guidelines governing the carrying of alcohol on metro trains. Under the new norms, passengers can carry sealed bottles of alcohol within certain limits. Previously, there were restrictions on taking any form of alcohol on the metro. Still, the revised guidelines aim to strike a balance between ensuring safety and meeting the needs of commuters.

According to the new guidelines, a passenger can carry up to two sealed bottles of alcohol on the metro. The bottles should be unopened and adequately sealed, ensuring no leakage or tampering. The permitted quantity includes Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL) and imported liquor. It is important to note that the revised norms apply solely to sealed bottles, and consuming alcohol on the metro or bringing open containers remains strictly prohibited.

The DMRC has allowed travellers to bring two sealed bottles of alcohol per person inside the metro trains following the updated rules. However, it is completely forbidden to consume alcohol on Metro property.

While using the metro, people must conduct themselves appropriately. The DMRC will take appropriate measures following the applicable laws if any passenger is discovered to be acting indecently while intoxicated.

The DMRC prohibits a few goods from being carried on a person or in luggage when accessing a metro property. The list is as follows:

Sharp items include a khukuri, a sword, a knife with a blade over 10 cm (4 inches), scissors with cutting arms longer than 10 cm, and meat cleavers.Tools include an axe and a hatchet, a crowbar, a hammer, a cleaver-sword, a saw, a screwdriver, a wrench, a pair of pliers, and any other items longer than 7 inches (17.78 cm).

Conditions and Restrictions:

While the revised norms allow for the transportation of sealed bottles, certain conditions and restrictions must be followed. These guidelines have been implemented to ensure all passengers’ comfort, safety, and security. The following conditions apply:

  1. Age Verification: Passengers carrying alcohol may be subject to age verification checks. In Delhi, the minimum age for legally consuming alcohol is 25 years. and any underage passenger may be required to furnish identification proving their age.
  2. Security Checks: All sealed bottles of alcohol will be subject to security checks conducted by metro authorities. This is primarily done to ensure compliance with the revised guidelines and prevent prohibited items from being carried on board.
  3. Packaging and Visibility: The sealed bottles must be packaged discreetly and not easily visible to other passengers. This measure ensures that alcohol does not cause discomfort or inconvenience to fellow commuters.
  4. Time Restrictions: The transportation of alcohol is permitted only during non-peak hours. Peak hours, generally between 8 am to 11 am and 5 pm to 8 pm, are exempted from maintaining a peaceful commuting environment and avoiding any potential inconvenience to passengers.

Benefits and Implications:

The revision of norms allowing the transportation of sealed alcohol bottles on the Delhi Metro is expected to provide several benefits to commuters. Firstly, it recognizes passengers’ diverse needs and preferences, enabling them to travel conveniently with their purchases. Moreover, it eliminates the need for commuters to make separate arrangements for transporting sealed bottles and allows them to save time and effort.

The updated guidelines also aim to strike a balance between ensuring safety and security. By introducing age verification checks and discreet packaging, the DMRC aims to prevent underage drinking and maintain a respectful environment within the metro.
