RIL’s Green Energy Revolution Turns To Lucrative Sugar Mills Sugarcane Press Mud For Sustainable Power

Reliance Industries, RIL is spearheading an initiative to harness the potential of sugarcane press mud for the production of compressed biogas (CBG). In September, RIL Chairman Mukesh Ambani announced the conglomerate's plans to establish 100 CBG plants within the next five years. These plants are anticipated to utilize 5.5 million tonnes of agri-residue and organic waste. RIL is already operating a CBG plant in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh.

Reliance Industries, RIL is currently engaged in discussions with operators of sugar mills to secure a supply of sugarcane press mud—a crucial raw material for producing compressed biogas (CBG), according to sources familiar with the matter. 

An executive with knowledge of the development revealed that RIL is actively seeking press mud from large sugar mills capable of providing substantial daily quantities for its CBG plants. The company has extended its reach to various sugar mills operating across different regions of the country.

In a significant move announced by RIL Chairman Mukesh Ambani in September, the conglomerate plans to establish 100 CBG plants within the next five years. These plants are anticipated to utilize 5.5 million tonnes of agri-residue and organic waste. Currently, RIL is already operating a CBG plant in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh.

Industry experts estimate that, assuming RIL establishes a plant with an average capacity of 10 million tonnes per day of biogas, a daily supply of 250,000 tonnes of press mud would be required. The cost of press mud is variable, ranging from ₹200 to ₹500 per tonne based on the location of the sugar mill and the quality of the press mud.

What Is Press Mud

Press mud, also known as filter cake or press cake, is a byproduct of the sugar industry formed during the filtration of cane juice prior to sugar extraction. 

Importantly, it holds potential as a fertilizer, containing micro-nutrients such as calcium, sulfur, magnesium, and iron, along with macro-nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potash.

In the context of current events, India is recognizing the value of press mud—a residual byproduct of the sugar industry—as a critical resource for the production of green energy through CBG.

India plays a crucial role in the global sugar economy, having emerged as the leading sugar producer since the fiscal year 2021-22, surpassing Brazil and also holds the position of the second-largest sugar exporter globally.

The Scope Of Press Mud

Examining India’s press mud production, the fiscal year 2022-23 witnessed the country’s sugar production reaching 32.74 million tonnes, generating approximately 11.4 million tonnes of press mud. 

Key sugarcane-producing states, such as Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, contribute significantly, covering around 65% of India’s total sugarcane cultivation area. 

Ironically, sugar mills in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Karnataka may have a competitive advantage, with many of these mills being owned by politicians. 

Thus, this industry could potentially become a lucrative venture for politicians, paralleling the cash flow seen in mining and real estate sectors in the days to come.

RIL’s initiative to utilize sugarcane press mud for the production of compressed biogas (CBG) is environmentally friendly for several reasons-

Utilization of Agricultural Residue 

The primary feedstock for CBG production is agri-residue, such as press mud, which is a byproduct of the sugar industry. By using agricultural waste as a raw material, RIL would contribute to the effective management of residue, reducing the environmental impact associated with the disposal of such byproducts.

Reduced Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Compressed biogas is considered a cleaner and more sustainable alternative to traditional fossil fuels when compared to conventional natural gas. CBG derived from organic waste has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions significantly. 

It helps mitigate the release of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, that would otherwise be generated from the decomposition of organic matter.

Circular Economy Approach

RIL is adopting a circular economy approach by repurposing press mud as a feedstock for CBG production. This approach minimizes waste, promotes resource efficiency, and supports a closed-loop system where byproducts are reused to create value, thereby reducing the overall environmental footprint.

Fertilizer Production

Press mud is not only a valuable resource for CBG but also a rich source of nutrients.

When used as a fertilizer, it contributes essential micro and macro-nutrients to the soil, enhancing its fertility and thereby reducing the reliance on synthetic fertilizers that may have adverse environmental impacts during production and use.

Renewable Energy Generation

CBG is a renewable energy source, and its production from organic waste aligns with the broader goal of transitioning towards cleaner and sustainable energy solutions. 

Mitigation of Air Pollution 

The combustion of CBG produces fewer pollutants compared to conventional fuels, leading to improved air quality. This is particularly relevant in densely populated urban areas where air pollution is a significant concern.

Long-Term Sustainability 

As part of RIL’s commitment to establishing 100 CBG plants over the next five years, the company is contributing to the long-term sustainability of energy resources. 

This initiative aligns with global efforts to transition towards more environmentally friendly and sustainable energy practices.
