Despite the substantial Indian presence in the UAE, the market for traditional Indian jewelry designs remained fragmented and unorganized. Taking his first-ever flight—a detail that humanizes this business titan—Alukkas Varghese Joy established the company’s inaugural international store in Abu Dhabi, effectively following the customer rather than waiting for market conditions to improve at home.

The UAE expansion proved immensely successful, leading to the opening of another store in Dubai’s Gold Souk in 1988—a location synonymous with premium jewelry retail. Joy’s marketing creativity became evident when he became the first jeweler to offer a Rolls-Royce as a promotional prize in 2001, a tactic that generated substantial publicity and reinforced the brand’s luxury positioning.

However, like many family businesses, the Alukkas enterprise faced internal restructuring. In 2002, the five Alukkas brothers who had collectively managed the jewelry business decided to separate their interests. Rather than viewing this as a setback, Alukkas Varghese Joy seized the opportunity to redefine his business vision. He established a flagship 5,800-square-foot headquarters store in Kottayam, Kerala, followed by expansion into Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. In 2005, he rebranded his portion of the business as Joyalukkas—a move that would prove pivotal in establishing a distinct identity in an increasingly competitive market.

This commitment to quality and transparency earned the company the distinction of becoming India’s first jeweler to receive ISO 9001 and 14001 certifications.

Perhaps the most dramatic manifestation of Joy’s ambitious vision came on March 16, 2008, with the opening of a colossal 70,000-square-foot jewelry store at Chennai’s Prashanth Real Gold Tower. This behemoth establishment earned the title of the world’s largest gold showroom—a record that symbolized not just physical scale but the extraordinary growth trajectory of Joyalukkas, which had by then surpassed 4,000 crore rupees in revenue and achieved billion-dollar company status.

He revived his signature marketing approach in 2009, offering ten BMW luxury cars as promotional prizes. These calculated moves propelled Joyalukkas beyond 6,000 crore rupees in revenue, with over 90% generated from South India—a remarkable regional concentration for a business of its scale.

While competitors focused on expansive retail footprints, Alukkas Varghese Joy took a more measured approach, opting for smaller-format franchises. This strategy yielded impressive financial results, with Joyalukkas achieving a 31.3% return on equity—outperforming established competitors like Kalyan Jewellers and Senco. The signing of Bollywood actress Kajol as brand ambassador in 2017 further enhanced the company’s national profile. By 2021, Joyalukkas had reached 8,066.29 crore rupees in revenue with just 85 stores, generating an impressive profit of 472 crore rupees.

Today, Joyalukkas stands as a formidable global enterprise with revenue exceeding 14,513 crore rupees and net profits of 899 crore rupees from its Indian operations alone. With 160 stores spanning 11 countries and diversification into shopping retail, silk products, and money exchange services, Joy has created a veritable business empire. Yet perhaps what makes his story truly remarkable is that despite achieving a personal valuation of 36,520 crore rupees—making him India’s wealthiest jeweler—Alukkas Varghese Joy remains connected to his roots, investing in housing development and educational initiatives in his native Kerala.
