It would have been easy to step away or pass on the responsibility to someone else. Instead, Malavika did something extraordinary—she took charge.
Malavika’s journey with CCD began under heartbreaking circumstances. But rather than crumble under the weight of the enormous debt, she chose to carry forward the legacy her husband had built. She immediately addressed CCD’s 25,000+ employees in an open letter, reassuring them of her commitment to the company’s future. Her first step was to directly engage with every lender. In an era where face-to-face meetings are rare, Malavika met each stakeholder personally, convincing them to renegotiate terms. By doing so, she significantly reduced interest payments. This strategic move allowed CCD to pay off Rs 1,644 crore in dues, easing a substantial part of its financial burden.
Having addressed the non-operational debt, Malavika turned her focus to CCD’s operational efficiency. Her approach was thoughtful and meticulous—she identified unprofitable coffee machines, even those located in seemingly bustling areas like business parks, and shut them down. This hard, yet necessary decision brought the number of CCD outlets from over 1,000 to a leaner 500. The result? The group’s debt shrank further, now down to Rs 5,000 crore.
But she didn’t stop there. Understanding the need for fresh capital, Malavika made another bold move—selling stakes. She strategically divested shares to entities such as Mindtree, Shriram Credit Company, and Way2Wealth, which infused critical funds into CCD. She also orchestrated the strategic sale of Global Village Tech Park in Bengaluru to Blackstone, raising a significant amount to further reduce the company’s liabilities. While these moves diminished the family’s stake, they underscored her commitment to CCD’s long-term survival and sustainability. By this stage, the debt had been reduced to Rs 2,693 crore—an extraordinary achievement in itself.
But Malavika knew the journey wasn’t over. With CCD’s financial structure stabilizing, she turned her attention to generating new revenue streams. One of her most astute strategies was capitalizing on the high demand for quality Arabica beans. Sourced from the company’s sprawling 20,000-acre farm, these beans found eager markets abroad, bolstering CCD’s export revenues.
In addition to exports, Malavika introduced the CCD Value Express kiosk—a model that took the beloved CCD experience to highways, workplaces, theaters, and malls. This concept not only improved accessibility for customers but also provided a steady stream of revenue. Thanks to these initiatives, the debt was whittled down even further to Rs 1,731 crore.
Today, CCD stands tall once again. As of recent data, with 495 cafes spread across 158 cities, 285 value express kiosks, and over 36,000 coffee machines in operation, the company is a symbol of resilience. Under Malavika’s stewardship, the debt has been slashed to just Rs 465 crore—a remarkable 95% reduction from the starting point.
Beyond the impressive financial turnaround, Malavika’s story is one of personal strength. She never left the country during the company’s darkest hours. She chose to raise her two children independently, even as she took on the mammoth task of rescuing CCD. And she succeeded, not just in saving the brand, but in creating her own legacy—a testament to her vision, determination, and unwavering dedication.
