Uber is hiring 140 engineers in India to develop products across areas such as rider and driver growth, the marketplace, digital payments, customer service, delivery, and more. Earlier, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi is excited to move engineering innovation to India as it will be more economical for the company. The company had also declared its programs to let its employees work from home till July next year and also added a $500 allowance to install up a work from the home office.

Ride-hailing giant Uber is hiring 140 engineers in India to manufacture products over areas such as rider and driver growth, safety, delivery, customer service, the marketplace, digital payments, risk and compliance, and finance technology.

The progress comes after a story by The Information in the month of July. It stated that Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi is excited to shift engineering innovation to India as it will be more affordable for the company.

Recently, the company had also declared its intentions to let its employees work from home till July next year and added a $500 allowance to install a work from the home office.

“We’re leveraging India’s excellent product and engineering talent to service our next wave of services and products. We’re looking to hire engineers who’re strongly technical and passionate about resolving complex problems in mobility and delivery. We welcome the country’s top experts and provide them with a very enriching experience,” Jayaram Valliyur, senior director in Uber’s global finance technology team said in a report. Valliyur was employed lately by the firm.

The company said that it has begun moving out to prospective candidates to make new teams and adding to existing ones that include Uber infrastructure, marketing, the marketplace, Uber for Business (U4B), and advertising programs.

Earlier, as a part of its vast global layoff of 6,700 employees, Uber India had set up 600 employees in India. “The impact of Covid-19 and the variable nature of the improvement has left Uber India with no alternative but to decrease its workforce size. Around 600 full-time jobs across driver and rider support and other functions are being affected. These modifications are part of earlier announced global job cuts this month,” Pradeep Parameswaran, President, Uber India, and South Asia had spoken during the layoffs in May 2020.

However, Uber’s wish to move its engineering to India is not something new. While his visit to India in 2019, Khosrowshahi had said that India is persisting in being an essential source of innovation for them. “One example is the Uber Lite app that was created and built in India and moved to over 30 countries around the world,” he told.

Manik Gupta, the former Chief Product Officer of Uber, said that Uber is proud of the engineering and product talent based out of Bengaluru and Hyderabad. “We aim to double the headcount in these offices and have 1,000 people to establish innovative products out of India,” he said.
