BANK OF CEYLON is a prominent commercial bank in Sri Lanka that the government owns. Its headquarters are housed in an iconic cylindrical building in Colombo. Within the country, the bank has 628 branches, 689 automated teller machines (ATMs), 123 CDM networks, and 15 regional lending centers. It also operates a 24-hour call center and a 24-hour branch in its Colombo office. In addition to its local presence, the bank has an offshore banking section in its Colombo headquarters, three chapters in Malé, Chennai, and Seychelles, and a subsidiary in London.
Sir Ernest de Silva was the first chairman of the Bank of Ceylon (BOC) when it was established in 1939. Ceylon was a British colony then, and the bank was ceremoniously opened on August 1 by the then-governor, Sir Andrew Caldecott. The British government established a banking arm for its government-related enterprises. BoC began to grow outside of Colombo two years later, in 1941. Its first branch opened in Kandy. BOC expanded into key cities, including Galle, Jaffna, Kurunegala, Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Badulla, and Panadura.
