A Biological Safety Cabinet is a vented enclosure that protects the user, the product, and the environment from aerosols generated when potentially harmful microorganisms are handled. A HEPA filter is used to discharge the continuous airflow to the atmosphere.

When working with biological agents that offer a low risk/threat to laboratory staff and the environment, Biosafety Level 1 is used. Generally, work with these agents is carried out in open laboratory cabinets without the use of specialised containment equipment. Biosafety Level 2 pertains to the handling of harmful or infectious organisms that pose a moderate risk. Salmonellae, Hepatitis B virus, and Measles virus are all examples.

When working with indigenous or exotic agents that may cause serious or lethal disease by aerosol transmission, biosafety level 3 is required. Yellow Fever and Encephalitis are two examples.
