2. Najib Razak: The former Prime Minister of Malaysia was accused of receiving funds from the 1MDB fund. Najib was convicted of several charges related to the scandal in 2020 and is currently serving a 12-year prison sentence.

3. Tim Leissner: A former Goldman Sachs banker who pleaded guilty to charges related to the 1MDB scandal and is cooperating with authorities.

4. Andrea Vella: Another former Goldman Sachs banker who was charged in the United States for his role in the scandal.

Roger Ng was born in Malaysia in 1971 and grew up in the country. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School with a degree in finance and later earned an MBA from the University of Chicago.

Ng began his career in finance at JPMorgan Chase, where he worked for over a decade before joining Goldman Sachs in 2008. 

At Goldman Sachs, he was a managing director in the bank’s Southeast Asia division, and he was involved in the underwriting of the 1MDB bonds. Ng was based in Hong Kong at the time.

Ng’s involvement in the 1MDB scandal began to emerge in 2016 when Malaysian authorities began investigating the fund’s activities. In November of that year, he was placed on leave from Goldman Sachs pending an investigation into his role in the bond offerings. 

In December 2018, Ng was arrested in Malaysia and later extradited to the United States to face trial.

In March 2019, Ng was indicted by a federal grand jury in New York on charges of bribery and conspiring to violate foreign anti-bribery laws, among other charges. 

He was accused of helping to orchestrate the fraudulent bond offerings that helped to finance the 1MDB fund. Ng pleaded not guilty to the charges.

After a lengthy legal battle, Ng was convicted in March 2021 on one count of conspiracy to violate the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. He was sentenced to 10 months in prison, with credit for time served, and was ordered to pay a $1 million fine. 

Ng was released from prison in August 2021 and is now serving the remainder of his sentence under house arrest in the United States.
