Paytm extortion case: Sonia Dhawan didn’t apply for bail while husband’s plea rejected

A special court in Delhi has denied the bail plea of Rupak Jain, the husband of Sonia Dhawan and one of four key accused in the Paytm extortion case.

According to the court order, Jain’s crime is of “serious nature” thus bail can’t be granted. However, he has continued to dismiss the charges.

Now, Dhawan’s family will reportedly move the bail application to Allahabad High Court. Importantly, no one from family including Dhawan pleaded for her bail in session court.

According to Jain’s admission in court, he has not received any money as an extortion alleged by the Noida-based company. He also denied any link to the fourth accused in this case Rohit Chomal (absconding since others arrest) saying that he doesn’t even know him.

Jain’s lawyer also emphasised the fact that the accused is not a Paytm employee and he was unnecessarily framed in this case.

On November 5 (Monday), Jain appeared before the district judge in Surajpur Court through video-conferencing. Further, the Noida-based court had set November 14 as the date for the next hearing on Jain’s bail application.

A week ago, Prashant Tripathi, who has been advocating Dhawan in the case revealed that her family had shown reluctance regarding her bail. He also hinted of some disagreements in this matter.

Earlier, Tripathi had said that the promoters of Paytm were pressurising Dhawan to sell her stake in the company and she was framed in the extortion case.

Meanwhile, a team sent to nab Chomal in Kolkata returned empty handed and failed to trace his whereabouts.

For the uninitiated, Dhawan, Jain, Chomal and Devendra Kumar were blackmailing Vijay Shekhar Sharma in tune of Rs 20 crore after stealing his personal and financial data.

Dhawan and Jain had received similar kind of ransom call that later traced in Bharaich (Uttar Pradesh). Police also had sent a special team to nab the unknown caller, however, the investigating team is yet to identify the caller.

While the court proceedings would ultimately unfold the truth, Chomal’s abscondment and Dhawan not applying for bail seem unusual and surprising as well.
