The company in a statement said that they had role eliminations in a small number and they regularly review their business priorities like all corporations and make necessary structural changes.

In addition the company said that they will keep investing in their business and renting in strategic locations in the coming year.

According to sources, these firings were planned in July itself. Microsoft, led by Satya Nadella, intended to lay off fewer than 1% of its overall staff of 180,000 employees.
