Agnipath protests: Tight security in West Bengal’s Howrah amid call for Bharat bandh today

Security has been beefed up in several areas of West Bengal’s Howrah district in the wake of the Bharat Bandh, which was declared on Monday by organisations in protest of the Agnipath recruitment scheme announced by the Centre last week.

The entry age for all new recruits into the armed forces was set at 17.5 to 21 years. However, after the protests, the central government announced an increase in the upper age limit for hiring agencies from 21 to 23 for the 2022 hiring cycle, as hiring was not possible in the last two years.

Meanwhile, police in several states announced measures and tightened security for the June 20 protest. In the neighbouring areas of Delhi, Faridabad, and Noida, Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) has been imposed, prohibiting the gathering of four or more people. The Uttar Pradesh Police said strict action will be taken against those involved in endangering the peace.
