Congress leader Pawan Khera, took this opportunity to state that they would also extend a hearty welcome to the Prime Minister, only on the condition that other Modis are also brought back to India. He further went ahead and said, they would stand and wait to properly conduct a welcoming session at the Delhi airport if the BJP government could bring back fugitive offenders namely, Nirav Modi and Lalit Modi.

This is not the first time Congress has done word play with the name “Modi.”

In a piece of political satire from 2019, Rahul Gandhi made mockery of the Prime Minister by suggesting that the PM and wanted individuals like Nirav and Lalit Modi, possessed the same last name.

Gandhi rhetorically said, “Why do all these thieves have Modi as their last name?” during a campaign rally in 2019 referring to Lalit Modi, Narendra Modi, and Nirav Modi. High-flying diamond trader Nirav Modi was accused of committing bank fraud. The profitable Indian Premier League cricket franchise’s manager, Lalit Modi, endured a lifetime ban for misbehavior and indiscipline by the nation’s cricket governing body. In addition, he said that the term Modi represented the alliance between PM and the country’s largest crony capitalist.

Only Narendra Modi Could Have Filed Defamation Complaint, Case Politically Motivated': Rahul Gandhi's Appeal In Surat Court

Punesh Modi, a former cabinet member from Gujarat, sued Rahul Gandhi in 2019 for disparaging the “Modi” community. Rahul referred to everyone who had the surname Modi as a thief, while addressing at a political event in Kolar, Karnataka.

On March 23, 2023, a court in Surat, Gujarat announced its decision in this criminal defamation lawsuit against Rahul Gandhi in the favor of Punesh Modi. The Congress leader, as a result, has been given a two-year prison sentence, according to the judgement. A two-year prison sentence would prevent Mr. Gandhi from running in the general election in 2024.

Legal expert Gautam Bhatia seems to disagree with this viewpoint and stated on Twitter that unless someone can prove an explicit reference to oneself, comments to a general class of people—in this instance, surnames—are not punishable. If an individual claims that all attorneys are thieves, the lawyer cannot sue him for defamation provided he can prove that the statement was made with him in mind.

Coming back to the other fugitive Modis-

During a joint press conference with the prime minister at the Hyderabad House in New Delhi on April 22, 2022, British PM Boris Johnson answered to a query regarding efforts to get Mallya and Nirav charged with fraud totaling many thousands of crores. He indicated that the UK has demanded the return of Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi to India for prosecution and suggested they should be extradited there. He acknowledged the fact that there were technicalities which had made it exceedingly challenging but the UK government has directed their extradition.

He further added-

We don’t welcome, I want to make it absolutely clear now, people who want to use our legal system to evade the law in India.

However, even after one whole year of this press conference which took place in April 2022, these fugitives have not come back to India. This makes us question the truth behind the efforts being taken to bring them back.

Further, with respect to the criminal defamation case against Rahul Gandhi, Lalit Modi came forward with a threat to file a case on him in the UK court. This made Congress question if Nirav Modi would also be pressurized to sue Gandhi. In this regard, Congress political KC Venugopal stated that the government and prime minister have hit a new low having cowards and fugitives coming to their rescue. She said that Lalit Modi, known to be a global scamster, who lives a luxurious life overseas due to the BJP’s inactivity, appears to be rushing to prime minister’s defense.

How can one trust the government to bring back these criminals when there are alleged narratives of government support to these fugitives for helping them run away. There are many unanswered concerns in this area- How do these alleged criminals manage to escape from India before the authorities even approach them? Why did PM Modi ignore the letter highlighting the possibility of a scam in 2016? Why do all these fugitives have strong connections with the ruling party?

Even if all these allegations and narratives are proven to be false, the scams as well the people responsible behind the scams fled the country, all under BJP’s watch. Hence, there needs to be no proof established that BJP is connected to the scams. The fact that Prime Minister Modi, who had portrayed his image as being India’s chowkidar protecting the country’s monetary resources, failed miserably at his job.
