Minister of State for Finance Bhagwat Karad briefed Parliament that the number of bank frauds involving Rs 1 lakh or more has increased from 135 in FY17 to 289 in FY18; 383 in FY19; 652 in FY20; and 826 in FY21.

In the previous three years, the number of scams at India’s largest lender, SBI, has decreased. According to the minister, there were 751 events in FY17, 923 in FY18, 931 in FY19, 673 in FY20, and 283 in FY21.

 

ICICI Bank had 518 frauds of Rs 1 lakh or more over the nine-month period, followed by IndusInd Bank with 377, Axis Bank with 235, State Bank of India with 159, and HDFC Bank with 151.

According to Karad, many measures have been implemented to combat bank fraud. Aside from that, steps have been taken to discourage fraudsters from committing crimes.

In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Karad noted that the Reserve Bank of India’s instructions to banks, as well as the government’s wide-ranging structural and procedural changes, have helped to curb bank fraud during the previous five years, and the amount involved has dramatically decreased.

Aside from that, he added, steps have been taken to dissuade fraudsters from committing crimes.

He noted that bank fraud had decreased dramatically in the previous five years, falling to Rs 648 crore in the first nine months of 2021-22. Bank frauds totaled Rs 61,229 crore in 2016-17, then fell to Rs 11,583 crore in 2020-21, then to Rs 648 crore in April-December 2021-22.
