Mizoram is considered the happiest state in the country by Rajesh K Pillania, a professor at Management Development Institute in Gurugram. Its students get a chance to develop their skills and abilities despite challenging circumstances despite the state’s 100% literacy rate.

Moreover, this state is the second in India to attain 100% literacy. Happiness in Mizoram is determined by six parameters: family relationships, work, work-related issues, philanthropy, religion, and COVID-19’s impact on satisfaction.

A student of Mizo High School in Aizawl, Mizoram, had faced many difficulties since his father abandoned his family when he was young.

Despite these challenges, he perseveres and excels in his academics. Upon failing to gain admission to his first choice, he hopes to become a chartered accountant or take the civil service exams.

Why Mizoram Is India’s Happiest State?

Mizoram, meaning ‘land of the Mizos’, topped the happiness index primarily thanks to its highly motivated youth. Mizo youth, regardless of their gender, aim for financial independence from an early age and do not consider any task too small.

There is a very low incidence of gender discrimination in this state. Other states will also be motivated to focus on educating young children at all levels.

Despite the state’s high prevalence of broken families and working mothers, children in this state are not misled but wish to achieve financial independence as soon as possible.

In the state, a private school teacher named Khiangte opined that since both genders are taught to earn their living, couples shouldn’t continue to live together in an unhealthy environment

State students feel comfortable sharing anything with teachers without fear or shyness and consider them their best friends and educators. Students become more self-confident through this teacher-student relationship.

A casteless society like Mizoram’s offers youth a sense of belonging through their upbringing. The region also has lower parental pressure for academic success.

There are some lessons to learn from Mizoram that can be absorbed by the rest of India at various levels. The state has recognized teachers as among the youth’s most effective catalysts for literacy, joy, and happiness.

Despite several families falling apart, they are still thriving without conflicts. Furthermore, regardless of gender, every child in the Mizo community begins earning money at a young age.

Typically, youth find employment around the age of 16 or 17. No task is too small. This is encouraged, and it does not discriminate between boys and girls. A large number of families are broken in Mizoram.

However, children will be better able to thrive when they have financial independence from an early age. Formerly, Lawngtlai was considered one of Mizoram’s most backward and disaster-prone districts.

Having developed this concept of ‘Kan Sikul, Kan Huan’ (My School, My Farm) over the years, now this district is well-known. During the Assam famine, Shashanka Ala, a district IAS officer, noticed that fruits and vegetables would often perish due to a lack of storage.

Poor diet contributed to Mizoram’s high proportion of stunted children under five. Hence, Ala developed this programme with the headmaster of the school. Nutrition Garden time is essential for every child, according to the headmaster.

Due to the high number of broken families in the state and the availability of many peers like them, children are not burdened by their broken homes. Furthermore, people prefer to live independently and see no purpose in living together in an unhealthy environment.

As mentioned in the report, the state students saw their teachers not just as teachers but as family members. This environment allows them to discuss their problems without feeling embarrassed. Youth can pursue their goals because of the absence of caste-based parental pressure towards academic success.
